A Tapestry of Legend and Nature

The name “Ella” is a Sinhala word meaning “waterfall,” and it’s a fitting name for an area abundant with cascading water. The town is surrounded by hills covered in cloud forests and lush tea plantations, and its famous Ella Gap offers a spectacular view of the southern plains of Sri Lanka, a vista that stretches for miles.

Ella’s history is intertwined with the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to local legend, King Ravana, the mythical demon king of Lanka, used a cave in Ella to hide the abducted Princess Sita. Ravana Falls: Located just a few kilometers from the town, Ravana Falls is a beautiful 25-meter-high waterfall that cascades down a rock face. It’s a popular spot for a quick dip and is easily accessible from the main road. The area around the falls is often frequented by monkeys.
